During the 2020 Covid 19 pandemic, FriendMatch adjusts to help meet the rising need for tools against loneliness.
FriendMatch Increases Resources to Meet Overwhelming Demand Driven by COVID-19 Isolation
WINNIPEG, MB — Online friendship matchmaking service FriendMatch has seen its traffic nearly double each month since the outbreak of COVID-19, prompting the platform to expand its infrastructure and support teams.
“Millions of people are finding us by searching ‘feeling lonely’ and ‘how to make friends,’” says FriendMatch founder Katie Miller. “We have been overwhelmed by the need to help people feel less isolated during this pandemic.”
Adapting to Rising Loneliness
To support users navigating social distancing and remote learning, FriendMatch has rolled out several key initiatives:
Virtual Speed-Friending on Campus: FriendMatch partnered with colleges and universities across the United States and the United Kingdom to host online speed-friending events. These virtual gatherings allowed incoming and returning students to build connections within their educational community before the term began.
Expanded Team: The company is hiring additional communications and tech support staff to maintain platform performance and respond to rapid user growth.
“The online speed-friending conferences helped students make friends even before starting school—an amazing way to foster community while learning from home,” noted Miller.
“When we launched in 2011, it was to help people make real connections. I never expected to see just how deeply people would need this service. The pandemic has made socializing harder, but by adapting our tools, we can make genuine connection accessible to anyone who needs it.”
